In an earlier post I mentioned our little man is walking. How excited we were. How proud! What on earth were we thinking????????
Not only is our little man walking, he’s running and climbing. In fact, I am quite confident he and Abby both evolved from apes (just kidding mommy) because they climb just like one. And they climb on everything!!! We’ve moved everything we think can present a dangerous situation and that has become a joke. Why – because even Currin is able to just move it back. Yep, anywhere he wants to and he at least tries anytime he wants to.
I’ve always said I need an extra pair of eyes when I am watching them but with both of them on the move and so active, I’d need about a hundred pairs. You absolutely cannot blink. Not for a second.
Case in point. Yesterday we were all three playing upstairs when Currin decided it was time to go back downstairs. I was holding his hand as we walked down the steps (isn’t that what any good Nana would do) when Abby came to the top of the stairs and had a meltdown because we were going downstairs. In the very micro-second it took me to turn my head to see what her problem was, Currin decided to turn too. And in that micro-second he tumbled down the stairs. Six stairs and the landing to be exact. As I grabbed for him I simply came up with air and all I could do was watch him roll and pray God would protect him.
I ran to the landing, picked him up and tried to see if he had any serious injuries. He only cried for a few minutes but it seemed like an eternity, probably because I kept poking, prodding and moving his arms and legs. He wanted to go to sleep but Nana was having none of that – no sir, not on my watch; so I spent the next two hours trying to keep him awake so I could make sure he didn’t have any head injuries. Luckily he was fine. Unfortunately, Nana still hasn’t fully recovered.
I bought Currin a plastic Cars chair and a Dora one for Abby. They looked harmless enough. Good idea you say – nooooooooooooooo, bad idea Nana. Currin has already fallen over in his on several occasions and during the rare moments he can keep it upright, Abby will kick it out from under him.
I want a cage – one with a door and a lock. New rules dictate only one child at a time is allowed out of the cage and then only on a leash. Inside and outside of the cage they must both wear helmets, knee and shoulder pads and any other protective gear I can come up with. Hopefully the gear will include some kind of mouth guard so I can prevent them from putting something in their mouth they can choke on.
Okay, before you call Children’s Services to report this abusive Nana, realize I know this is an unrealistic way to protect our babies. But if you are a mom or grandmother, haven’t you at least been tempted? I know from raising four of my own kids, things happen. It doesn’t make it any easier – they are my grandchildren for goodness sake. And they are in my care much of time.
So what do we do? We pray. In fact we pray a lot. Because I understand that as diligent as any of us try to be, there will be mishaps and accidents. We can only pray they are not serious ones. And the only one I know who loves them more than us, is Jesus our Lord and Savior. So dear Lord, today and every day I pray – please watch over my grandbabies. Keep them safe – keep them well.
PS Could you spare a minute to watch over Nana and mommy too – their hearts are going to need to be a whole lot stronger.
