It just doesn’t get any better than this! Today was one of the most incredible days Abby and Currin and I have had together. They were both in the sweetest, funniest and most loving moods I have ever experienced.
Yesterday Steph and I went shopping. When Steph picked me up I got in the car and Abby smiled and said “wow Nana, I love your shirt – it’s beautiful.” I had thrown on a bright peach shirt that apparently caught Abby’s attention. This morning I wore a simple blue Titan’s T-shirt. Abby looked at it and said “Nana, I liked your shirt yesterday better”. I said, “well Abby, I can’t wear that shirt every day can I?” “Sure” she said. “Just wash it”. Now why didn’t I think of that?
Abby came to me and wanted to build another spaceship. We pulled all the chairs, totes and boxes out we could find in the house and Abby lined them up like seats in an airplane. As I climbed into the “captain’s seat” at Abby’s insistence and buckled Currin in beside me I asked Abby to start the countdown for blast off. To my surprise she said “we’re not ready yet” and ran off. She soon came back with an armful of stuffed animals and dolls she preceded to place in the spaceship’s seats. Suddenly she looked at me and said “you have to get out Nana, you’re too big”. Now considering the fact I now weigh about 110 soaking wet I felt insulted and said “Abby, Nana’s not big – she’s little”. Abby looked at me with that knowing grin and said “not that kind of big Nana – you’re big cause you’re a grown up”. Dismissed again- dang!
Steph bought a pack of sun catchers you paint, dry and hang in the window. Abby and I painted those this morning and I was surprised at how adept she’s gotten at painting within the lines. They are drying on Steph’s counter tonight and tomorrow we will have new additions for the kitchen window. Oh, the joy of the simple things in life.
Currin’s newest game is to tickle you under the chin, giggle and then run off just a bit so he is still within your reach so you can tickle him. As adults we should be lucky enough to find so much enjoyment in something so simple.
The other thing he finds extremely amusing is to blow through his lips on your cheek and chin; actually all over your face. As he blows he makes such a funny sound and in spite of the fact you need a towel to dry off when he’s done, this Nana finds so much enjoyment in his silly game.
He also loves to stick his fingers in your mouth and have you nibble on them. He laughs so hard you can just about nibble all day. A couple weeks we were playing this game when his finger missed my mouth and rammed up my nose. It hurt so bad I saw stars, my eyes watered and my nose bled. Note to Nana – those fingers should be considered a dangerous weapon.
Abby and I were singing nursery rhymes today when I realized I had forgotten some of the words, a fact Abby found a bit disconcerting. After stumbling through a couple Abby looked at me and said “silly Nana, you need more practice”. Guess it’s time for a refresher course in Nursery Rhymes 101. You also now know why Nana makes up so many silly songs. Abby doesn’t know the lyrics to them.
I’ve also forgotten how to make a paper airplane, pirate hat and cat’s cradle. Was it really that long ago I made those with my kids? Maybe it’s time for Nana to go back to nursery school.
